Kiwi & ActivitiesTangiaro Kiwi Retreat
|
There are over 50 wild kiwi on the Tangiaro property, one of the highest kiwi populations on privately-owned land in the northern Coromandel. Three of them are monitored (remotely & electronically), and valuable insight is gained by the monitoring of these birds. These kiwi are the only monitored kiwi in the far northern Coromandel.
This is fully funded by Tangiaro, and includes 6 monthly health checks. Recent call counts in the area (National Call Counting Site) suggest a rise in kiwi numbers. |
Outdoors At Tangiaro.Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat

Here at Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat, the bush still echos with the primal calls of unusual birds and insects. In fact the Tangiaro Valley has one of the highest Kiwi call rates in the North Island – there is a good chance you’ll hear this unique call yourself during your stay with us at Tangiaro.
Banded Rail, Kaka, Tui, Kereru (Wood Pigeon), King Fisher and Fantail, can regularly been seen & heard from the Restaurant/Café' deck. At Tangiaro, there is nature everywhere. Take a walk up the Tangiaro Stream to reach our natural swimming hole, explore the old silver mines on the way . Lie back in a hot spa under the stars in our natural native bush or just relax on the deck of your lodge listening to the birds. Outdoor Activities Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat’s location means access to a range of outdoor activities. Tangiaro Stream – A shallow stream perfect for the younger children, follow the track to reach the natural swimming hole for the more daring! The swimming hole has a small waterfall above it. The Coastal Walkway – A popular walk with guests staying at Tangiaro is the coastal walk between Stony and Fletcher Bays. This walk takes approximately 7 hours return from Stony Bay. The walkway crosses farmland and goes through coastal forest with views of the Pinnacles, Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island) to the north and Cuvier Island (Repanga Island) in the east. The track follows an easy gradient with a short steep section in to and out of Poley Bay. It is part of an old bridle path formed by early pioneers to link the two bays. En route from Stony Bay to Fletcher Bay, a signposted lookout 1 hr 15 min along the track makes a shorter walking option, and gives outstanding views along the coast north to Sugar Loaf and Pinnacles area and south towards Port Charles. 45 min on from this lookout, the track descends steeply to Poley Bay. Swimming here is hazardous because of submerged rocks. A short steep climb out of Poley Bay brings the track out on to farmland where it heads down to Fletcher Bay. Beaches – Tangiaro is in close proximity of a range of nice beaches, Big Sandy is approximately 5km north and is kid friendly, ideal for fishing, kayaking, sunbathing or just meandering along the beach, it’s your choice. Fishing – Coromandel has some of the most productive fishing grounds close by which means avid lovers of fishing, diving and boating will be well taken care of. Big Sandy Bay has a Boat Ramp and we have a Wharf prior to the bay if you need to let people off and return to fishing. We recommend purchasing your bait in Coromandel Town on your way here. There is a fish filleting area beside the workshop at Tangiaro which guests are welcome to use. Mountain Biking – Start or finish your bike trip around Cape Colville at Tangiaro. We are an ideal base for challenging or easy mountain bike rides following the coastline. At present we recommend you contact Coromandel Discovery on 0800 287 432 or info@coromandeldiscovery.co.nz if you require bikes. Horse Trekking – We recommend Colville Horse Treks if you would like to go horse riding during your stay. www.colvillefarmholidays.co.nz. |
